Your home library... must include Bruce Peterjohn's "The Birds of Ohio."
NOT a field guide in any sense - no photos or illustrations - Peterjohn instead provides accounts of the present relative abundance and distribution of all species of birds that have been seen in Ohio, and to provide insight into their habitat preferences and breeding biology. In addition, he's chronicled the historical changes in abundance and distribution of many species since the late 1800's.
Now, this might sound dull, but I assure you, this is one of our absolutely key references for birding in Ohio. Species accounts are not overly lengthy. Very smoothly written. A necessary source for the serious birder. Printed in 2001, a revision is needed soon, as we have added multiple species to the state list, not to mention myriad records of high counts, invasions, and other notable state records.
